Overview
The Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI), founded in 2017 at Curtin University, is a strategic research project combining humanities scholars, data scientists, software developers and global partners to crate fresh insights into how open knowledge can reshape higher education. Leveraging big data and cloud computing, COKI has amassed one of the world’s leading open knowledge datasets, comprising more than 12 trillion data elements.

COKI’s approach is to gather, curate and analyse publicly available data from diverse sources to support universities, funders and research institutions in becoming “Open Knowledge Institutions.” This includes tracking open access status of publications across institutions and countries, analysing research funding flows and providing interactive tools that allow comparison and exploration of global trends.

Among its outputs, COKI has released the Open Access Dashboard, which demonstrates the open access status of research outputs by country and institution over time, as well as the Research Funding Dashboard, which visualises national funding patterns. It has also initiated projects such as the Book Analytics Dashboard (BAD), which aim to provide publishers and other stakeholders with usage analytics for open access books, promoting diversity in voices, geographies, topics and languages.
