Dr Uno Fang
Uno Fang completed his Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) in 2017 and his PhD in Information Technology in 2023, both from Deakin University. His doctoral research—Smart Agriculture: Advancements on Plant Disease Detection with Big Data and Deep Learning—laid the groundwork for his ongoing work in applied artificial intelligence, computer vision, and data-driven decision-making.
From Jan 2018 to Jun 2019, he was a software engineer on an NHMRC grant within Deakin’s Faculty of Health, building an online health education platform for Victorian secondary school students. In 2022, he served as an intern data scientist at Medigrowth Australia, leading a commercial analytics project on medicinal cannabis customers and product efficacy.
Since Jan 2023, Uno has been a data scientist at the Curtin Institute for Data Science (CIDS). His work spans several industry and research collaborations—including Automated Fish Identification (marine conservation computer vision pipeline), the ASKAP Galaxy Detection (deep learning models for radio-astronomy imagery), the Digital Child Machine Learning (accelerometer and video-based deep learning for child-behaviour studies), the BHP Mining Maintenance Optimisation (predictive maintenance computer vision), the WA Cancer Staging (state-wide healthcare data science initiative), etc.
His key competencies and research interests include:
• Applied Artificial Intelligence & MLOps
• Computer Vision & Image Processing
• Geospatial & Sensor Data Analytics
• Data Storytelling and Stakeholder Engagement
