Dr Paul Hancock
Pauls holds a PhD in Physics from Sydney University. For his thesis, he studied the youngest radio galaxies using a southern sky survey conducted at 20GHz. He was one of the key software developers for the survey processing.
After finishing his PhD, Paul worked as a postdoc from 2013 until 2021, first at Sydney University and later at Curtin University. His research focused on variable and transient radio sources and radio surveys. Within this period, he developed new software such as a technique called visibility stacking, a processing pipeline for the ASKAP-VAST survey, and the Aegean source finding algorithm.
Paul first joined the CIDS in 2020 as a maternity leave replacement. During this period, he was involved in the SMART pulsar survey project, which required a database/webservice app so the pulsar survey team could keep track of all the data processing, and view and rank the discovered pulsar candidates.
In July 2021, he returned to the CIDS as data science lead for the ADACS project, mainly working on ADACS teaching and software support projects, and teaching computer science courses for the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
His key competencies and research interests include:
• Computational Biology
• Molecular Genetics
• Full-stack Web Development
