Overview
Researchers, staff and students at Curtin University often face challenges in acquiring the computational and data science skills needed to effectively manage, analyse and interpret complex datasets. This skills gap is particularly evident in disciplines where data-driven approaches are increasingly critical. Traditional academic training typically lacks practical instruction in tools such as Python, R or version control systems like Git, leaving researchers to learn independently. This results in inconsistent skill levels, inefficient workflows and difficulties ensuring reproducibility and collaboration on data-intensive projects.

To address this, the Curtin Institute for Data Science (CIDS) partnered with The Carpentries, a global organisation dedicated to teaching foundational coding and data science skills. Since 2018, CIDS has delivered Data and Software Carpentries workshops, offering hands-on, interactive training tailored to Curtin staff and students. These practical, collaborative sessions, led by CIDS data scientists, cover essential programming tools, using real-world examples.

The workshops have significantly enhanced participants’ ability to automate tasks, ensure reproducibility and collaborate effectively. With over 30 researchers, students, and staff attending each session, workshops consistently sell out within hours, reflecting strong demand. By bridging the computational skills gap, this initiative has empowered Curtin’s research community and strengthened the university’s role in advancing global data-driven research.
